Balkan Countryside, Culture & Cuisine

Travel the picture-perfect lands of Bosnia-Herzegovina, visit traditional towns & get a taste of the area’s culture.

About Your Trip

Photogenic landscapes — and much more! — await you on this adventure to the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe. From your starting point in Mostar, travel west through Herzegovina, across a beautiful countryside of rocky formations, rolling hills, Roman ruins, waterfalls and culturally-rich towns. Stop at Pocitelj, a medieval town with a fort high atop a hill, an impressive clock tower, restored houses from 16th and 17th centuries, a mosque and carpet museum .

Your journey continues to Mogorjelo, home to an expansive set of well-preserved ruins of a Roman villa rustica dating back to the 4th century. After lunch, continue to the Kravice waterfall, one of the largest in the country, and the museum at Humac Franciscan Monastery that houses a collection of interesting artifacts, including the fabled Humac tablet from 1185. You’ll end the day at Medjugorje, a town that got the world’s attention in 1981 when it was purported that an apparition of the Virgin Mary appeared to 6 children.

During your leisure time, why not discover the delights of charming Mostar at your own pace? Stroll to the Old City of Mostar for a glimpse of UNESCO-protected Stari Most. Or, pull up a chair and relax at a traditional coffeehouse.

What we love:

• The Humac tablet has an inscription written in Croatian Cyrillic script — the first ever evidence of the Croatian language.
• Since 1981, approximately 40 million people from all over the world have set out on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje.
• Be sure to try cevapi, spicy meat sausages, which is the national dish of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Destination

Mostar is a tranquil town in Bosnia-Herzegovina, southwest of the capital Sarajevo. It welcomes tourists year-round as an escape from bustling Dubrovnik or Sarajevo. Its most famous attraction, Stari Most, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site called the Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar. This bridge, that straddles Neretva River, has stood since the 16th century until 1992 when it was destroyed during the Bosnian War and then restored by 2004. Surrounding it is cobblestone streets of the old town lined with cafes and shops.
